Szechuan Pepper

Szechuan pepper, also known as pepper flower, is a very important ingredient in cooking of Szechuan cuisine. Despite the name, it is neither related to nor tastes like black/white pepper or chili pepper. Szechuan pepper has a unique aroma and flavor that is not hot or spicy like other kinds of peppers, and it creates a numbing effect in mouth.

Szechuan pepper is also a herb used in traditional Chinese medicine and has the following effects:

  • Removing fishy smell from various kinds of meat
  • Improving appetite
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Easing ache
  • Improving appetite
  • Relieving itching
  • Dispelling internal cold
  • Killing helminth
